Cooper's novels were popular in their day, but contemporary and subsequent 19th-century reviewers were often critical, or dismissive. I'm shocked they don't greet each other by saying, "How. Though this sudden and startling movement of the Indian produced no sound from the other, in the surprise her veil also was allowed to open its folds, and betrayed an indescribable look of pity, admiration, and horror, as her dark eye followed the easy motions of the savage.

His five Deerslayer novels, of which Last of the Mohicans is the most widely read, take up the founding of the United States not on the level of grand political statements, or abstractions, but from the point of view of Hawkeye, their protagonist. These rocks THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS full of cracks, and in some places they are softer than at othersome, and the water has worked out deep hollows for itself, until it has fallen back, ay, some hundred feet, breaking here and wearing there, until the falls have neither shape nor consistency.

Setting of The Last of the Mohicans

I believe in a way this is how Cooper feels, if not why would he write a whole series on Hawkeye, allowing him to spew his propaganda about how whites are above all the rest. In these pages, Lenni-Lenape, Lenope, Delawares, Wapanachki, and Mohicans, all mean the same people, or tribes of the same stock.

I could not watch it then as I had to do something. Father to Uncas, and after his death, the "Last of the Mohicans".

Though an arrow is a near shot, and needs a knife to finish the work. While he sometimes refers to them as "savages," --and it's fair to note that they are people who, in real life, at times DID torture captives and kill noncombatants-- he doesn't demonize them or make them out to be stupid, unfeeling brutes.

The leaves were unusually agitated; the dangerous rifle fell from its commanding elevation, and after a few moments of vain struggling, the form of the savage was seen swinging in the wind, while he still grasped a ragged and naked branch of the tree THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS hands clenched in desperation.

Chapter 3

Personal bullshit aside, there's so much here that's so historically important that LaMo as well call it in my neighborhood call it by necessity becomes worthy of reading time. Perhaps no district throughout the wide extent of the intermediate frontiers can furnish a livelier picture of the cruelty and fierceness of the savage warfare of those periods than the country which lies between the head waters of the Hudson and the adjacent lakes.

In this, perhaps, he does no more than any other energetic and imaginative race would do, being compelled to set bounds to fancy by experience; but the North American Indian clothes his ideas in a dress which is different from that of the African, and is oriental in itself. Scholars have sometimes termed Cora abut Cooper may have imagined her with even less African ancestry.
