Throughout Yugoslavia 1980s, the IMF prescribed further doses of its bitter economic medicine periodically as the Yugoslav economy slowly lapsed into a coma. He then began a campaign against the ruling communist elite of SR Serbia, demanding reductions in the autonomy of Kosovo and Vojvodina.

After his death in 1980, the weakened Yugoslavia of federal government was left unable to cope with rising economic and political challenges. Except for secret negotiations between foreign ministers Genscher Germany and Mock Austriathe unilateral recognition came as an unwelcome surprise to most EU governments and the United States, with whom there was no prior consultation.

The assault on the socialist economy also included a new banking law designed to trigger the liquidation of the socially owned "Associated Banks. A major problem for Yugoslavia was the heavy debt incurred in the 1970s, which proved to be difficult to repay in the 1980s.

Serbs saw the new constitution as conceding to Yugoslavia and ethnic Albanian nationalists. On 28 April 1992, the Serb-dominated FRY was formed as aconsisting only of the former Socialist Republics of Serbia and Montenegro.

During the war, the Serbs fought valiantly alongside England, France, and the US with the Allies, while their Slovene and Croat cousins — citizens of the multiethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire — were compelled to take up Yugoslavia against them.
